What Exactly Is The "Entourage Effect"?
With terms like CBD, THC, Cannabinoids, Terpenes, Flavonoids and more being thrown about, it's easy to get confused about what they're all for. Whilst we can't make claims about what each of them does, we can talk about the effect they have on each other. Read on to find out more about what is known as the 'Entourage Effect'...
The Entourage Effect
The ‘Entourage Effect’ is essentially a synergistic interaction of multiple components of the cannabis plant itself. By combining multiple compounds, you almost get a multiplying effect, with each compound amplifying each other’s natural chemistry.
You can, of course, choose an isolated CBD oil, which are also a popular option. These are great if you didn’t want the full effects of a whole plant CBD option, or if you wanted a product without any THC whatsoever.
The products which are stated “whole plant CBD” are the products that can achieve the entourage effect. This is because they use the entirety of the plant without isolating a certain cannabinoid. In fact, they contain a range of cannabinoids, flavonoids, terpenes & fatty acids that are all naturally occurring in the cannabis plant.
On a whole, the plant contains approximately 500 individual components, including around 100 phytocannabinoids (THC & CBD etc).
What Are Flavonoids & Terpenes?
Flavonoids are compounds found in plants which give them their pigmentation as well as helping them to attract pollinators and prevent plant diseases. Overall, there are approximately 20 flavonoids found in cannabis.
They too contribute to the entourage effect.
Terpenes on the other hand, are the aromatic compounds found in all plants. They are responsible for the smell of the plant.
Using Whole Plant CBD
Many individuals seem to prefer whole plant products rather the isolated variety. When shopping for CBD, this is why we recommend browsing for high quality whole plant options, rather than isolates. However, this depends on your personal preference, and what you are looking to use the CBD for.
