Medical Marijuana Explained

Using the Marijuana plant, from the Cannabis family, Medical Marijuana is exactly the same as recreational usage but instead, used for medical purposes. It is made from the dried parts of the Cannabis sativa plant.

It is easy to distinguish Marijuana from its shape; broad leaves, a tight bud or a nugget shape. From afar, it will look like a small, thick bush.

There are multiple ways to take Medical Marijuana including to inhale it through a vaporiser, eat it, apply it topically to the skin or place drops sublingually under the tongue. It has been found that vaporising enters the system quickly; whereas eating it will delay the effects for 1 – 2 hours.

Medical Marijuana is growing in popularity around the world

Marijuana vs. Hemp

Both derived from the Cannabis family of plants, Marijuana and Hemp are both naturally growing.

Hemp is a non-psychoactive chemical that is low in Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). It only contains < 0.2% when cultivated - resulting in its legality. It requires minimal care when cultivating and can be used on a variety of products, including cars, body care, clothing and more.

Marijuana has a high amount of THC, between 5% - 35%, and is therefore a psychoactive drug. This is why is it illegal in a majority of places. It must be grown in a carefully controlled atmosphere and can be used for both recreation and medical purposes.

What Is It Used For?

Medical Marijuana has been used to aid conditions including: Alzheimer’s, appetite loss, epilepsy, nausea and much more. With no conclusive evidence of proven help, it is found that the greatest effect has been for therapeutic effects like chronic pain, nausea and vomiting.

How Does It Help?

Marijuana contains cannabinoids, which are chemicals that are found in all Cannabis plants.

Medical Marijuana received a lot of attention when a form of the drug aided to control seizures in children. One very public case was that of Billy Caldwell, who reportedly had up to 100 epileptic seizures a day. After being one of the first children to be prescribe medical Cannabis oil, he went around 250 days without a seizure but this was halted to a stop when the Home Office ordered his GP to not renew his prescription. After seeing his parents struggle, the Government decided to look into the laws and eventually, legalised Medical Marijuana in the UK.

Are There Are Side Effects?

There are reported side effects of Medical Marijuana including bloodshot eyes, depression, dizziness, increased heartbeat, hallucinations and low blood pressure. This drug has also been known to affect judgement and co-ordination which can result in serious injuries.

Is It Legal?

In November 2018, the UK Home Secretary Sajid Javid introduced legislation which made it possible for UK residents to legally access cannabis for medical reasons.

Being changed from a Class A to a Class B drug under the Misuse of Drugs Scheduling Act of 2001, this change came about due to a string of high-profile cases of young children that desperately needed Medical Marijuana to survive. A report on the state of Cannabis in Europe found that doctors in the UK did not know how to prescribe Cannabis as they felt they weren’t knowledgeable enough.

A spokesperson for the NHS England stated “The decision to prescribe medicinal cannabis is a clinical decision for specialist hospital doctors, made with patients and their families, to determine the most appropriate medication or course of treatment for an individual patient.”

Many states in America, Australia, Canada, Germany and many more countries have also legalised Medical Marijuana.
